Games for family night

“Surprise” games

Galette des rois

According to French tradition, you hide a bean in one of these cream-filled flat pastries and the person who finds it is crowned King or Queen for the day. You can adapt this idea by hiding some edible tidbit in your own dessert and the person who finds it gets the right to seconds!

Under the chair

Place a surprise (gift certificate, candy, etc.) under one of your chairs and only announce the fact that someone has something under their chair after dinner.

Games for the whole gang to play

Meatballs

This game is played in 6 steps

  1. Make two teams
  2. Each person writes down 4 names (personalities, objects, characters, etc.) on 4 small pieces of paper and wads them up into (meat)balls
  3. Place all the “meatballs” in a hat or a bowl
  4. Round 1: One after the other, the teams send one player to play first and he or she has one minute to help them guess as many of the words as possible by DESCRIBING them only and not saying them. The round is over when the hat is empty. Each team counts their meatballs and puts them back in the hat.
  5. Round 2: One after the other, the teams send one player to play first and he or she has one minute to help them guess as many of the words as possible by PANTOMIMING them only and not saying them. The round is over when the hat is empty. Each team counts their meatballs and puts them back in the hat.
  6. Round 2: One after the other, the teams send one player to play first and he or she has one minute to help them guess as many of the words as possible by SAYING ONE WORD ONLY. Once he or she has said a word, they don’t get another chance and better hope that their team guesses, so they better choose wisely!  The team that accumulates the most points in the three rounds is the winner.

Stickers

Each person has a sheet of 10 stickers in their possession. The goal is to stick them all on other guests, without the other person knowing. If someone sees someone trying to sneak a sticker onto someone, the person caught in the act has to take back their sticker and the person who caught them gets to place one of his or her stickers on them. The winner is the person who sticks all 10 of his or her stickers without getting caught.
